Wetlands Trail
In addition to its historical and archaeological gems, the Union of the Municipalities Nora-Bithia can boast fantastic landscapes linked to its wetlands: a hugely important habitat for Mediterranean flora and fauna.
The wetland trail covers several tens of kilometres that can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by car, enabling visitors to trek along a series of ponds and lagoons a short distance from the beaches.
The route begins in the lagoon of Nora, by the archaeological area of the same name. Here, walking through the nature trail takes you across dense Mediterranean scrub with Phoenician juniper plants. Pink flamingos populate the lagoon between winter and spring, searching for crustaceans to feed on.
A further 19 km to the South-West, the beaches of Monte Cogoni and, a little further along, Su Giudeu, in the local district of Domus de Maria are the backdrop for the wetland known as “Stagni di Chia” (Chia’s ponds), which includes three lagoons named Stagno di Chia, Su Stangioni de Su Sali and Campana. The lagoons and sand create a lunar landscape with shifting dunes and reeds. It is mainly junipers and tamarisks that surround the brackish waters of the ponds, while birdlife includes the red heron, flamingos, peregrine falcon, Corsican gull and kingfisher.
The next wetland is 14 km away, near the beach of Piscinnì. The lagoon here tends to dry up in the summer season, but the various species typical of the brackish environment can still be found.
