Monte Cogoni is a beach on the renowned coastline of Chia, in southwestern Sardinia, within the municipal boundaries of Domus de Maria.
About 190 metres long and 30 metres wide, Monte Cogoni is an extension of Sa Colonia beach, where as many as 700 visitors can be comfortably accommodated.
It boasts the characteristically fine, amber-coloured sand and clear emerald-green-to-deep-blue shallow water. As well as being a safe beach for bathers, especially children, it is rich with marine life and hence particularly recommended for divers.
A system of lagoons visited by pink flamingos, seagulls and other resident and migratory birds forms a spectacular backdrop. The air is fragrant with the scent of Mediterranean plants like cistus, myrtle and centuries-old junipers.
To the east, a high cliff features a watchtower built in the 16th century against Saracen incursions, known as the Torre di Chia, at the top. On its slopes are the remains of a temple dating back to the Punic period. At the base of this cliff was once the Punic and then Roman city of Bithia, which was a significant Mediterranean settlement more than 2000 years ago.
