Sacred area of Su Cardolinu

Domus de Maria

The islet of Su Cardolinu (in Sardinian: the mushroom) lies about 300 metres from the beach of Su Portu, around Chia (Domus de Maria).

It features several small buildings made of finely worked sandstone ashlars reused from an older monument from the Nuraghic Age (10th century BC): they are the remains of a sacellum, an altar and a shrine from the Punic period (5th century BC).

Moreover, in the 1960s, work from the CNR (National Research Centre) and the Archaeological Superintendence for the Provinces of Cagliari and Oristano, revealed funerary urns that suggested the presence of a tophet. Tophets were open-air cemeteries/sanctuaries that in Punic times had the function of housing the ashes of children who died prematurely. Next to the cinerary urns, there was usually a stone stele indicating the grave and propitiating a new birth.

Approximately 60 metres to the north, visitors can still see (and walk) the ancient Roman road that linked Karales (the present city of Cagliari) to the city of Bithia, also passing through Nora.

At certain times of the year, when the sea level drops and leaves a natural sand bridge between the mainland and the islet, it is possible to reach Su Cardolinu on foot.
