Festival of San Giorgio

Sarroch

In the countryside of Sarroch, in the locality of 'Barracas de Sus', is the 17th-century church dedicated to Saint George of Suelli.

Until 2008, only a few ruins remained of this building, and the people of Sarroch had to do without these much-loved celebrations because of the poor condition of the monument.

Today, the church is restored to new life and is the stage of a folk village festival celebrated every year on the 23rd of April, marking the day when San Giorgio the Martyr, Bishop of Suelli, died. San Giorgio was born in Cagliari in the 11th century and became bishop of the rural Sardinian village of Suelli at the age of 22. Several miracles are attributed to him, and he is the object of strong devotion on the island, with many churches and a religious pilgrimage dedicated to him.

The celebrations begin with a mass in the country church of San Giorgio after which the 17th-century statue of the saint is hoisted onto an ox-drawn chariot, decorated with flowers and ears of wheat, and is accompanied by a large procession from Sarroch and neighbouring villages. Taking place at sunset, the procession is torchlight and follows a route once used for the procession of Sant'Efis. The sound of launeddas, prayers and sacred songs accompany the parade.
