Church of San Giorgio

Sarroch

In the countryside of the municipality of Sarroch, in the locality of 'Barracas de Sus', is the Spanish-era church dedicated to Saint George, bishop of Suelli.

Until 2008, only a few ruins remained of this building, which is now fully restored. Unfortunately, no documents mention the exact date of its construction, but based on the architectural features, it was presumably built between the late 1500s and early 1600s.

The population of Sarroch had allegedly abandoned the village and moved to a safer area in case of attack by pirates. Thus, a new village was founded in the locality of 'Tanca de sa Cera' and the church of San Giorgio was built at that time.

After Sarroch was repopulated in the early 1700s, the building and its adjoining village were gradually abandoned, and a few ruins remained of the church. In 2008, a restoration was carried out that brought the place of worship and its sacred celebrations back to life. The restoration brought back the church to its original state. In fact, it consists of only one room, with small niches for the custody of the statues of the saints. To the left of the room is a small sacristy with two connected rooms that served as accommodation for the parish priest, who was almost always the vice-parish priest of Sarroch. The façade is simple: it has a wooden doorway inside a pointed arch and a central rose window above it that allows light to enter. Above is a bell gable with two arches containing a bronze bell. Today, the church is again the scene of a popular, village festival celebrated every year on 23 April. Veneration and celebration are all centred on the cult of San Giorgio Martire Bishop of Suelli.
