Casa Mascia

Sarroch

One of the most interesting and emblematic buildings is undoubtedly Casa Maxia. The building, now owned by the municipality, is located in the heart of Sarroch's historic centre.

The small town of Sarroch is located in the western part of the Golfo degli Angeli on the coast of south-western Sardinia. It was founded as an important agricultural centre in the Middle Ages and maintained this economic characteristic until the mid-20th century.

Starting in the late 1960s, with the birth of the petrochemical industrial centre, the town experienced a demographic as well as urban growth. However, Sarroch has managed to keep its pretty and rich historic centre almost intact. In this respect, one of the most interesting and emblematic buildings is undoubtedly Casa Maxia.

The building, now owned by the municipality, is located in the heart of Sarroch's historic centre. It is a manor house that reflects the ancient rural architecture of southern Sardinia, better known as 'casa campidanese'. It was built in the mid-19th century using sun-baked earth adobe, known as 'ladiri', and covered with lime mortar. Inside, the house has no less than 14 rooms facing a central courtyard. The latter is equipped with storerooms, a garden, a well and accommodation for livestock.

The population of Sarroch is very fond of this monument. For more than a century, in fact, on the night between the first and second day of May, it has continuously offered shelter to the chariot containing the warrior martyr Sant’Efis (Saint Ephisius), and to the pilgrims of the confraternity, before its departure on its journey to Pula the following morning. In this regard, there is a will, dated 20 December 1886, written by the landlord Efisio Mascia, inviting his heirs to keep his vow, continuing to host Sant’Efis for years to come.
