San Giorgio Church itinerary

An ancient church dedicated to Saint George stands in the locality known as “Barracas de Sus”, in the countryside of the Sarroch local district. The little church was likely built in Spanish times around the mid-1600s, although there is scant information about its origin.

It is here that the parish priest of Sarroch celebrates mass to kick off the festivities in honour of St. George, a celebration that is deeply sacred and spiritual in character. At the end of the liturgy, the 17th-century simulacrum of the saint is hoisted onto an ox-drawn chariot, decorated with flowers and ears of wheat, and is escorted by a large procession of the faithful from Sarroch and neighbouring villages.

Taking place at sunset, the procession brings torchlights to the route once followed for the procession of Sant'Efis, with the chant of prayers and sacred songs accompanied by the sound of launeddas. The 2.5 km trail leading to the church of San Giorgio Martire Vescovo di Suelli (St George Martyr Bishop of Suelli) is best followed on foot or by bicycle.

It starts from the heart of Sarroch town centre (Piazza Repubblica, known to locals as Pratza 'e Cresia or Church Square), between the Town Hall and the parish church of Santa Vittoria Vergine. From here, you can follow Via Siotto and Via Cagliari and then proceed along a road called Via San Giorgio, which partially intercepts a rural area known as Pranu de Santu (the Saint's Plains).
