Villa d'Orri is located on the northern outskirts of the municipality of Sarroch, in a very suggestive and fascinating setting between the sea and the countryside.
It is the only royal villa in Sardinia. This charming residence was built between the late 18th and early 19th century at the behest of Marquis Don Stefano Manca Amat. When the nobleman inherited the land on which the villa was later to be built, there were only a few small rural houses, a small church dedicated to the Virgin of Carmel, a vineyard and an orchard.
In 1799, the Marquis decided to start building work. In that very year, due to the French occupation of Piedmont, the royal family of Savoy was forced to take refuge in Sardinia. It was from that moment that Villa d'Orri began to regularly host monarchs for several months of the year.
Inside, one can visit some richly decorated rooms that still preserve some of the clothing used by the monarchs, among which the christening dress of the future Queen of the Two Sicilies and Blessed Maria Cristina of Savoy, a king's jacket with its elegant gold embroidery and even a curious travel mug in the shape of a swan.
One of the gems of the house is definitely the Chinese drawing room, all decorated in oriental style. The mansion is surrounded by a splendid garden, rich in exotic and ancient plants; from this one then accesses the actual entrance to the villa, which, with its frescoes, is intended to give the more opening space to the whole building, creating a whole with the interior of the house. On 1 May each year, during the procession of Sant’Efis, the statue of the saint also makes a stop in the chapel of the villa.
