Tower of Budello

Teulada

The tower of Budello is located at the mouth of the port of Teulada. Designed for Cagliari entrepreneur Pietro Porta, Work on its construction began in 1601 and was probably completed in 1604.

It is a tower 'de armas', which was manned by a commander, a gunner and four soldiers to protect the bay of Teulada from possible attacks by North African pirates. It was in visual contact with the other towers: Sant'Isidoro, Piscinnì and Malfatano to the southeast and Porto Scudo to the south-west.

It underwent several restorations over the years, but remained garrisoned until 1843, when it became an anti-smuggling checkpoint. Its first commander was Costantino Melis, who held this position from 1603 to 1614.

Architecturally, it is very similar to the nearby tower of Piscinnì: cone-shaped, with a height of 9.80 metres and the main chamber standing at about 4.5 metres above the ground.

The chamber is vaulted with a pillar in the centre and mouldings on the sidewalls; it features wooden floors and a trunk, a fireplace, an access hatch to a cistern and a staircase to the terrace. A parapet with embrasures and battlements is visible at the top. The external staircase was built after 1843, when the tower became a strategic post for combating smuggling instead of guarding against pirates.
