Su Stangioni Foxi

Pula

About 2 km east of the town of Pula in southern Sardinia, the locality of Su Stangioni Foxi is a beach about 500 metres long by about 20 metres wide.

This stretch of coastline is closed to the south by a small sandy promontory called Monte Santa Vittoria and to the north by the mouth of a seasonal brook, the Rio Pula, that separates it from the beach of Su Furcadizzu. This corner takes its name of Foxi Durci (Sweet River mouth) after the river that begins approximately ten kilometres north-west in the Monte Nieddu mountain range in the territory of Sarroch.

It also separates the beach into two parts: the upper side is called Su Stangioni Foxi Niedda and the lower part Su Stangioni Foxi Linu.

This is a pebble beach, light grey in colour, with deep green water and rocky seabed that, however, does not reach great depths within a few metres of the shore. During the winter months, the beach may be covered by beached Posidonia.

There is no lifeguard, bar or rental service on Su Stangioni Foxi Niedda beach, which is why it is never particularly crowded, even in high season, and it is not naturally sheltered from the winds. Another noteworthy feature is the islet of San Macario, approximately 500 metres east of the shore, where visitors can see a 16th century tower, the ruins of a Byzantine monastery and a tuna fishery dating back to the Spanish period.
