Nuraghe Mereu

Villa San Pietro

Located about 900 metres east of Villa San Pietro, near the administrative boundary with the municipality of Sarroch, the Nuraghe Mereu is undoubtedly one of the most imposing nuraghi in the area.

The building stands on the summit of the hill of the same name, in a strategic position that commands a vast view stretching from the Torre del Diavolo promontory (2.4 km to the N/E) to Punta Forcadizzo (1 km to the S/E).

The nuraghe was built during the Bronze Age (17th-16th century BC) using cyclopean boulders of local volcanic stone. Although some parts are collapsed and overgrown with vegetation, the 'quadrilobate' nuraghe is a true archaeological complex, with a central tower called 'keep', four other smaller perimeter towers, joined by a wall called 'bastion' and an outside wall called 'antemurale' surrounding all the structures.

The best-preserved tower is undoubtedly the central one, also the tallest, which still contains the side niches carved into the wall thickness.

The surrounding area displays a concentration of remains from the Nuraghic period, especially nuraghi and Tombe dei Giganti (Giants’ Tombs). In fact, a well-preserved Tomba dei Giganti, also called Mereu, lays just a few metres from the nuraghe.
