La notte dei poeti

Pula

For more than 40 years, the ancient Roman theatre of Nora, in the municipality of Pula, has been the enchanting setting of a spoken word event called La Notte Dei Poeti (The Night of the Poets).

The cultural event is organised by the local administration of Pula and a cultural association called CeDAC (Centro Diffusione Attività Culturali). The Italian Ministry of Culture has given special status to this event for over thirty years, as ‘the only regional reference for the promotion of theatre culture in Sardinia’.

Indeed, the festival has expanded over the years, staging a great variety of prose, but also dance and music performances, and it is now a truly multidisciplinary circuit able to draw to Sardinia world-class performers, actors and directors.

Throughout the month of July, the archaeological area of Nora is transformed into a stage with a magical setting. The ruins dating back to Roman times, the sea and the Coltellazzo tower lend additional charm to the performances.

Nowadays, some performances also take place in the centre of the town of Pula. The festival programme ranges from ancient mythical tales to modern tragedies, through re-readings of classics, contemporary texts, recitals and concerts, leading the public into a journey between past and present among the ancient columns and mosaics of the archaeological site.

After more than forty continuous years of success, the event’s prestige attracts visitors from all over the island and from mainland Italian regions.
