Feast of the Spirito Santo

Domus de Maria

The feast of the Spirito Santo takes place over the Pentecost weekend in Domus de Maria.

The celebrations last for five days and begin on the Friday before Pentecost, with a competition between “is cantadoris” who perform improvised poetry in the Sardinian (Campidanese) language. The following day, an afternoon mass in the Church of the Madonna del Rosario in the village of Domus de Maria kick-starts the sacred procession.

The statue of the Holy Trinity is carried from the parish church of the village, dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario, to the 16th-century church of the Spirito Santo located in Chia.

Sunday begins with a morning mass, followed by an evening procession of the statue through the streets of Chia. On the Monday following Pentecost, the statue makes the reverse journey, from Chia to Domus de Maria. The procession maintains the ancient tradition of carrying the statue on a cart pulled by beautiful oxen, bred for this purpose only. The traditional carts, called 'traccas' in the Sardinian language, are as richly decorated with flowers, fruits and jewels, as the oxen that pull them, and people are wearing their traditional costumes.

The streets where the statue will pass are covered with 's'arramadura': a floral carpet made with flower petals, myrtle, mastic, lavender, laurel, sage, cistus, helichrysum, juniper, broom, thyme, and wild olive, providing amazing colours and scents to those watching or taking part in the procession. The entire route echoes with the sound of the launeddas, an ancient Sardinian musical pipe instrument made with three reeds.
