Feast of the Madonna del Rosario

Domus de Maria

The feast of the Moadonna del Rosario celebrates the patron saint of the town of Domus de Maria.

It takes place once a year, on the first Sunday of October, and has its centre stage in the parish church of the same name, built around 1291.

In the Sardinian language, the local festival is called 'S'Arroseri'. Traditionally, the festival entails several church masses and a folk procession from the church to the sea. The statue of the Virgin Mary is first paraded through the streets of the town, usually accompanied by the choral prayers of the faithful on the way and then is carried to the sea.

A peculiarity of this celebration is 'Sa Ditta': a public auction where typical local products are displayed and sold, cloaked by an aura of sacredness.  The village of Domus de Maria dresses up for this occasion, adorned throughout its streets with flags and festoons, while the roads where the procession is expected are covered with flower petals and fragrant leaves. This ritual is called 's'arramadura' in the Sardinian language. The worshippers who accompany the statue are dressed in the traditional dresses of the village while other groups, also in typical costume, arrive from many other villages in the outskirts of Cagliari and from the Campidano, often accompanied by launeddas and accordion players.
