The festival dedicated to St John the Baptist, patron saint of Pula, takes place from 21 to 24 June.
The celebrations begin on 21 June in the old town centre with the recitation of the Holy Rosary followed by Holy Mass inside the parish church of the same name, and this is repeated on the following two days, the 22nd and 23rd of June.
On June 24th, after the celebration of Holy Mass, the carefully prepared procession begins: members of the confraternity place the 17th-century statue of the saint on a Baroque hexagonal shrine made of glass and wood, crowned with a small dome, a wooden cross and flag at the sides.
The shrine and the statue travel on a red wooden cart pulled by two mighty, elegant brown oxen joined by a yoke adorned with multi-coloured fabrics and driven by an expert coachman. The heads and horns of the two oxen become displays of brightly coloured floral tributes, especially yellow, red and white.
The procession is led by the members of the confraternity with the parish priest, followed by the civil and religious authorities and two launeddas players, between them and the cart, as the faithful in tow sing sacred songs to the sound of the musical instruments. The procession parades through the streets of the village before returning to the parish church late in the evening. The surface of the roads passed by the procession are covered with leaves of scented Mediterranean herbs and rose petals that give fragrance and colour to the passage of the saint and the faithful.
