Cala del Morto

Domus de Maria

Loosely translated as Cove of the Dead, this beach is located in the protected natural area of Chia, in the municipality of Domus de Maria, on the southwestern coast of Sardinia.

The site's unique name comes from a crucifix among the rocks, inspiring many stories over time. There are different beliefs about the cross's origin: one is that it commemorates an angler who drowned during winter storms, while another suggests it honours a shepherd from Domus De Maria who died due to a war remnant explosion.

Cala del Morto is a small beach, further reduced by a strong sea storm in 2017, set between the larger beaches of Monte Cogoni and Campana.

Its fine, golden sand stands out against the clear sea that sparkles with colours ranging from blue to emerald green. Rich in marine fauna, its shallow seabed makes it an ideal spot for diving and snorkelling enthusiasts.

The surrounding landscape is enriched with dense Mediterranean vegetation, including junipers, myrtles, and mastic trees, which offer a variety of intense scents and vibrant colours throughout the entire year, not just in summer.

Access to the beach is via a 15-minute walk from the adjacent Campana beach, or a short ride in a canoe or a SUP board.

This is a wild beach with no lifeguard or leisure services (for the joy of those who dislike crowded places), but it is safe for children too, because of its shallow seabed and sheltered location from the mistral wind.
