Cala del Faro

Domus de Maria

The cove is named after its 19 metres high lighthouse, one of the oldest in Italy, which was built on the cliff by the Italian Navy at the behest of King Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy in 1866.

The lighthouse was bombed by American planes during World War II and restored after the war. Lighthouse keepers and their families lived there until the 1980s, when an automatic system took over.

After more than 30 years of abandonment, ambitious restoration work began in 2006 to transform the military architecture and convert it into a luxury tourist facility.

The promontory consists of very ancient granite rocks graced by typical juniper, cistus, mastic, and myrtle shrubs, which give intense scents of Mediterranean scrub and colour the surrounding landscape with various shades of green.

A short distance to the east is the beach of Cala Cipolla, while to the west are the boulders known as 'i Padiglioni' (the Pavilions) and the islets of Ferraglione; here the rocky coast is dotted with coves accessible by boat or on foot, walking along impervious paths.
