The beach of Sa Colonia is part of the renowned coastline of Chia, a hamlet of Domus de Maria, in the southern part of Sardinia.
Here you will find a long beach of fine sand ranging from white to golden shades and crystal-clear water shimmering with emerald green and blues.
The landscape is stunning: tall dunes of fine, amber-coloured sand dotted with centuries-old junipers and carrying the special scents of the Mediterranean maquis.
Behind them, pink flamingos and seagulls rest on the brackish waters of a lagoon. Undoubtedly, however, the most striking element here is a narrow promontory that laps against the sea, crowned with a tall coastal tower built in the 16th century, during the Kingdom of Spain, to defend the coast from Saracen pirate attacks.
On the slopes of the tower, recent excavations have brought to light a large staircase and a Punic temple (5th century BC) dedicated to a female deity. At the base of the promontory once stood the Punic and later Roman city of Bithia, one of the most important in the island of Sardinia, of which very few traces remain today.
This is a suitably shallow and safe beach for children, while the rich marine environment makes it particularly interesting for those who love diving.
