Is Cioffus Gorge Nature Trail
The area of the Gutturu Mannu Regional Natural Park extends mainly across the local districts of the Union of the Municipalities Nora-Bithia.
To reach the Is Cioffus gorge, in the Gutturu Mannu Regional Nature Park, exit the SS195 from Cagliari at the junction for Sarroch and turn left for the Monte Nieddu dam. Following the signs for the dam, turn right after about 2 km. The paved road turns into an unpaved drive for about 7 km, ending at a farm indicated as “parcheggio per Is Cioffus” (park area of Is Cioffus).
Leave the car here and continue on foot or by bicycle along a dirt road that follows the bed of the Bidda 'e Mores brook to the north. There are no signs along this circular trail, only a few piles of stones. After about 2 km from the car park, you will reach the gorge, after which the path begins to climb, first gently and then a little steeper but still following a comfortable trail, reaching a height of about 400 m.
The path meanders along an old mule track used by coal makers (whose stone settlements traces are still visible) through a dense forest of old holm oaks and junipers, passing north of Punta de Is Cioffus (500 m) and Punta Tiriaxeddu (523 m). Walkers can spot deer and mouflon along the ridges or hear the cries of birds of prey flying over the area. The summit is the ideal area for a picnic lunch under the shade of the trees. The trail runs downhill from here, still easy, joining the dry bed of the Riu Pampinaxiu. Follow it southbound for a few kilometres, until you reach the unpaved road and, about 2 km further, the car park area.
