Is Cannoneris Nature Park Trail
One of the richest forests in the Mediterranean basin, Is Cannoneris is a popular tourist destination for its flora and fauna.
The nature park has been repopulated with species such as the Sardinian deer and fallow deer, alongside wild boars, weasels, dormice and foxes. The forest sits at the centre of a system of state-protected forests: Pixinamanna, Gutturu Mannu, Pantaleo and Monte Nieddu.
The easiest way to reach the park is to start from the town of Domus de Maria and travel about 13 kilometres along a road to the locality of Sedda Is Tovus, located near the forestry barracks. A road and numerous signposted trails allow you to explore the area by bicycle and on foot, surrounded by a lush vegetation of holm oak woodland, Mediterranean maquis and conifers. Indeed, a comprehensive signposting system enables hikers to explore many trails, whether walking paths or mule tracks.
One of the best trails is called D-212 A and runs for 6,900 metres, with a walking time of about two hours. It crosses the upper part of Rio Calamixi and offers spectacular views of the gorges.
A second trail, called D-200, can be split into two stages: the first runs from Pixinamanna to Is Cannoneris and the second from Is Cannoneris to Pantaleo. The first stage is 11.3 km long (4h30'), with a 888 m difference in altitude, while the second is 16.5 km long (5h40'), with a 860 m difference in altitude. Both trails consist of coal makers’ mule tracks in the forest, with views of the Pantaleo Forest.
