Sagra del Pescatore (Fisherman's Festival)

Teulada

Fishing is undoubtedly one of the most widespread economic activities in the Teulada area.

For over forty years, the first few days of August are dedicated to a celebration of the strong bond between the people of Teulada and the sea: the Sagra del Pescatore.  The locals love this celebration as much as the tourists, who take this opportunity to get to know the true nature of the village and its inhabitants.

The religious side of the event begins with the celebration of an open-air mass at the port. After the mass, a fascinating procession follows at sea: the statue of the Madonna del Pescatore is loaded onto a boat and transported to the islet called Isola Rossa. A long procession of small boats and fishing boats follows the vessel carrying the statue. Once on the island, all boats stop for a moment of recollection and prayer: a large wreath is laid in the water in honour of those who died at sea.

Once the commemoration is over, the trail of boats returns to the starting marina and the Sagra del Pescatore in Teulada takes on a livelier turn. The streets of the town centre are lined with stands and stalls where it is possible to taste traditional fish dishes prepared for the occasion with fresh fish donated by local fishermen. The event creates a wonderfully convivial atmosphere enhanced by wine, dancing and music.
