Feast of the Madonna del Carmine

Teulada

The Church of the Madonna del Carmine or of the Blessed Virgin of Carmel is located in the centre of Teulada.

Also known by the locals as Su Cramu, it was probably built in the Spanish era, and it houses the statue of the patron saint of the village.  The second weekend in July, from Friday to Monday, the village celebrates its patron saint.

The rites begin on Friday evening with Holy Mass, while the procession takes place after the afternoon mass on Saturday. Members of the Confraternity of the Rosary, wearing long, white hooded robes, take turns carrying the statue of the Madonna and parading through the streets of the village. As well as ‘escorting’ the statue, the confraternity takes care of the organisation of the event.

This fascinating procession is opened by horsemen and women in traditional Teulada dress, and richly decorated oxen carts called 'traccas' in the Sardinian language. There are also worshippers from neighbouring villages who accompany the statue on foot, also dressed in traditional folk clothes, as well as local politicians and military authorities. The parade is accompanied by the music of the municipal band, organetto and launeddas (an ancient instrument typical of southern Sardinia) players.

The evenings are also packed with events such as plays in the Sardinian language, poetry competitions and performances by musical bands.
