Feast of Sant’Isidoro

Teulada

Isidoro was born in Madrid in the 11th century, and he is much venerated on the island and in many other Mediterranean communities.

Isidoro is regarded as the patron saint of farmers and believed to be responsible for several miraculous grain crops.

He is therefore invoked to propitiate an abundant and fertile harvest by several religious traditions well established in Europe. In Teulada and the surrounding area, Sant’Isidoro is celebrated twice a year: in May to propitiate water, pastures, and winemaking, and in September to thank him for the harvest.

The first celebration takes place on 15th May, with a religious procession that sees his statue carried from the parish church to the 17th-century country church dedicated to him. The statue is hoisted onto an ox-drawn cart, decorated with flowers and ears of wheat, and is accompanied by groups in traditional dress on foot and on horseback, from Teulada and from different Sardinian villages.

Around a hundred horsemen and women and hundreds of worshippers on foot, gather to join the procession at 10am in the churchyard, where the president of the committee hands over the flag with the effigy of the saint to the person bidding the highest offer, who will have the honour of carrying it throughout the procession. He or she will lead the procession, followed by oxen-drawn carts and richly decorated tractors.

The second festival takes place during the third week of August, with sacred events, concerts, and folk performances.
