Church of the Beata Vergine del Carmelo

Teulada

The church is located in the northeastern part of Teulada. Also known by the locals as Su Cramu, it was probably built during the Spanish domination.

The building we see now, however, features the classical Latin cross scheme, as it is the result of a reconstruction carried out at the end of the 18th century. The façade is linear, with a tympanum on top, a circular rose window below and a bell tower on the left.

The design we can see today was drawn up by the Piedmontese engineer Giuseppe Maina and is based on the classic Romanesque style of medieval churches. The façade has a raised rectangular entrance with a wooden doorway, surmounted by an architrave and a frame. On either side are two niches that originally contained statues of saints.

A flight of 10 marble steps leads inside the church, which retains the original baptismal font, several paintings, the pulpit and, above all, a crucifix dating back to 1700

Every year, on 16 July, the square before this church comes alive for the Feast of the Madonna del Carmine, patron saint of Teulada, with processions and traditional rites accompanied by folk song and dance. Next door is the museum housing 'Tesori della Parrocchia Vergine del Carmine' (Treasures of the Parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel), where visitors can admire several sacred paintings in the first wing, and a collection of documents and texts of great historical value in the other wing.
