Church of San Francesco

Teulada

Located in the ancient district of Lau de Arriu, in the historic centre of Teulada.

The Church of San Francesco was built in the 17th century for Pietro Porta, an entrepreneur and feudal lord from Cagliari, and later annexed to the property of the noble Sanjust family.

The single-nave church was built in late-Gothic style, with a quadrangular shape and a well-squared façade surmounted by a bell gable built in 1729. Just above the entrance door (the only door in the building), there is an octagonal window with scenes from St. Francis' Canticle of the Creatures engraved on the surface.

Next to the church there used to be a convent of Franciscan monks, of which no trace remains today.

On the outside, along a perimeter wall, bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the life of St. Francis were added in 1994. To this day, oral sources maintain that the gallows were placed near the church, for those condemned to receive spiritual comfort from Franciscan monks before their execution.

The feast in honour of the saint takes place on the 4 October, with a mass and a procession carrying the statue of the saint on foot through the streets of the village and then back to the church. The church is also home to the ritual of 'S'Iscravamentu', introduced in Sardinia by the Spanish in the 16th century, which re-enacts the deposition of Christ from the cross.
