Situated in the large Golfo di Palmas, in southwestern Sardinia, Cala Zafferaneddu is a fine white sand beach that takes on a pinkish hue in places.
Even though the bay is well sheltered on the east and west sides, it is particularly exposed to north westerly mistral winds. It is about 500 metres long and framed to the north by dunes of fine white sand dotted with Mediterranean scrub plants, especially juniper and maritime pine, with their intense, pleasant scents.
The water is a spectacular turquoise, clear and crystalline, a delight for snorkelling and scuba diving, and the seabed is very shallow and sandy. A few hundred metres to the east, sunbathers can see the tower of Cala Scudo, built to guard against the landings of Saracen pirates in the Spanish era, and to the south, the promontory of Capo Teulada, the southernmost tip of Sardinia.
This is a wild beach with no services and no easy access, so it is a destination for those who prefer to go off the beaten path. Access from the sea is more popular, and a local small harbour can accommodate a few small and medium-sized boats.
Enclosed within the military polygon of Teulada, the beach is only accessible during the summer months.
